About Deena

I have been a steadfast voice for responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars. During repeated budget challenges—including multimillion-dollar shortfalls and proposed reductions—I demanded greater transparency, clearer communication with families, and decisions that prioritize students over special interests. 

I abstained from approving a major teachers’ union agreement until the district’s reduction plan was addressed, insisting that compensation commitments be paired with a realistic path to fiscal stability. I dissented from budget reduction frameworks that risked normalizing “qualified” budgets and continued to ask why services for children were being cut while overall funding increased. I have repeatedly called for open processes, better public reporting, and every dollar to serve classrooms and students first.

Healthy students are the foundation of strong schools. I have advocated for practical measures that keep campuses secure and students protected—supporting improved physical security, anti-bullying practices, and environments where every child feels safe to learn. I opposed proposals that would have closed elementary schools, recognizing the disruption such moves cause to children’s stability and well-being. My priority remains protecting the core supports and safe conditions students need every day.

I serve on the Math Task Force and continue to push for data-driven strategies that raise achievement, strengthen critical thinking, and prepare students for college, careers, and life. I support inclusive wellness approaches and programs that help all students develop strong mental and emotional foundations without singling groups out. Academic success and healthy minds go hand-in-hand; both require focused resources, high standards, and protection from distractions that pull attention away from learning.

I value our educators and have supported fair compensation when it can be sustained responsibly. At the same time, I insist that classroom priorities and student needs remain at the center of every decision. I work to increase transparency and parental involvement so families are genuine partners in their children’s education.

My guiding principle is simple:
Healthy budgets enable healthy students and healthy minds. I will continue standing up for accountability, transparency, and decisions that put Livermore’s children first.
